Not to defend...

because I loathe spyware / adware as much as the next person. BUT, I will say this, while there are a number of 'drive-by download' spyware programs, MOST are installed by the user by agreeing to install some other programs that's attached to it (whether it be the PC owner or 'my cousin who was looking at pr0n on my PC without my knowledge'). You may not realize that you're installing it because you don't bother to read the EULA. Of course, if you ask people about it, 99.9% will say 'I'd never agree to use that,' but the fact of the matter is, the BULK of this crap comes with something else you want and (sometimes) something you got for free. This extra crap is how the people giving out the 'FREEBIES' pay for their expenses. Yes, spyware/adware is a pain in the cache, but in the end, people need to be more careful about taking responsibility for what it is they install. As far as 'pre-installed' software goes, I have yet to come across anything on any major vendor's PC that can't be removed through the normal Add/Remove option. I've worked on PCs and cleaned off crap that people came back with a week later even AFTER the hard drive was replaced and the OS was installed from scratch.

Bottom line, it's your PC, don't assume that everything free (or cheap) is good.
