There is a reason for the boot time...

Not that it is an excuse! I've noticed that the big AV suite makers take over the boot process apparently so your network card can't connect before the suite's firewall is fully engaged. This use to be a problem a few years ago when I had to turn off my DSL modem until the Norton firewall could activate.

With the exploding popularity of highspeed network access and with most users NOT buying a hardware firewall like they should - the main players found it necessary to push this feature into their AV suites.

This is why I am about to give up on all encompassing software security suites. None of them that I have tried in 2007 was not bloated RAM hogging junkware. I hear Kaspersky's is the only suite left worth having but I'm not doing a trial until my present solution expires. I hate trusting the Russians, but OH WELL! Maybe with ZoneAlarm free and AVG or NOD32 a guy can make it work. I'd still feel better if ESET offered a private data blocker; but with the superior configurability that may no longer be necessary.
