Cisco has Market Share, but nothing More!
The point Kerravala misses, or doesn't quite understand (but which is critical nonetheless), is reflected in his statement that Enterasys would experience a harder sell because most customers might not have end-to-end Enterasys equipment. Enterasys does not require an end-to-end proprietary solution. Cisco does. I've found the Enterasys' Secure Networks solutions to be industry standards based. The Enterasys solutions seem to be made more for real-world situations in which customers have a multivendor/best of breed environment.
I also found it interesting that although the article highlights the edge that Enterasys' Secure Networks has in the market, that quantity (market share advantage) versus quality seemed to be important. Again, how do you think Cisco gained that market share? Proprietary solutions sure help.
