My guess, and its just a guess, is it was a trial run
If you went to all the trouble to build a huge net, to be the proverbial haystack hiding the needle you would need to test it prior to conducting a real attack. You would go after the best in the business to see if it had an impact. You would expose only a portion of the net to avoid tipping off the real targets. Ans you would cease the attack prior to it being understood and defeated.

But, that's just me, if I was going to do a devious thing like tahe, which I wouldn't.

But methinks some big cyber attacks are in the works .... those terroristas are actually some pretty smart dudes!

They know what and when they are going to do it, we need to figure it out by correlating logs and traffic after the fact accross machines which are in multiple administrative domains. The building of the attack is much easier than the defeating of it!
