SP2 includes an anti-virus API... It's called attachment management framework or something similar to that. It handles inbound email attachments and file downloads from IE, giving a hook for AV makers to scan the files as they come in.

Imagine that ... SP2 has a new feature which sets up MS to produce a new service ... of course MS will publish the hooks so that all anti-virus developers can make best use of them prior to MS's new product competing with them ... right?

I think MS needs to go ahead and bundle AV software with Windows so that all MS users have it and are no longer a threat to the internet. The downside is that they might become more complacent about fixing bugs then.

When MS bundles stuff into the OS it cuts the financial incentive for others to invest in developing functionality to compete. Actually its MS that's competing and the original vendor drops out of the market.

When a SW ISV or two drop out of the market the opportunity for the best solution to be made available is redusced and you end up using the Microsoft bundled product rather than the stuff that used to cost $25.00 which actually worked!
