If I had, I couldn't tell anyone ...
That's the real tragedy of the situation. The feds now operate under a veil of secrecy and coercion that is unparalleled in history, even during the height of WWII and the Cold War. Would YOU even think of not cooperating when the prez and the attorney general are big fans of secret detention and torture? I think not. Today the US government "security" forces would feel right at home in the Soviet KGB system, they share much in common.

The founders of the country feared the power of government abuse more than anything else, because they had been abused, lied to, and suppressed by their previous government. They knew the dangers at first hand. The founders wisely tried to build safeguards into their new government to prevent abuse, and keep the most evil powers away from officials.

The founders did their best, but they ultimately failed, because the citizens of today grew too ignorant and lazy to protect themselves, even though the founders gave them the power and the weapons. The natural development is a government that willfully and actively looks for ways around the rules and safeguards, or in the case of the Bush administration, brazenly and publicly defies them. Every president since Nixon has looked for ways to hide their wrongdoings behind things like "executive privilege". Every attorney general since Edwin Meese has looked for ways to pervert the very laws they take oaths to enforce.

"When you cannot protect yourself, evil is done to you. When you choose not to protect yourself, you do the first evil."
