Some things are OK, but not the whole package.
I would suggest that there is nothing wrong with being able to validate a passport -- just like you can validate the digital certificate used by an ecommerce web site -- but when things go much beyond that, it invites a whole lot of evil into the equation.

Certainly, if one wanted to take the worst case example -- you need look no further than the highly flawed American "No Fly List" (which happens to include toddlers, people long dead, politicians - including a Canadian MP, average joes -- to something over 75,000 names at last count).

Once the ball starts rolling -- it doesn't stop. Ask people in London who are photographed an average of 300 times per day in the course of going about their daily business.
