Camera Surveylance is already a fact of life
actually, the cameras aren't installed by the cities (at least in NY), but by the businesses to survey their properties and parking lots. In fact there was a news article on TV I saw recently that showed how a woman was murdered in front of a particular building and the guy was IDed by cameras scanning the front of the building and the parking lot. businesses use this as a form of security for their businesses.

I think the poster before you had the wrong city as it was London they showed the street cameras. it wasn't specified what part of their government how was watching/owned these cameras, but they are there.

Cameras ARE installed at intersections in NYC to watch for cars running red lights (which takes a picture of the license plate and the drivers face and gives out automatic tickets). These cameras have been there for a number of years now. They were talking about installation of (and maybe have installed) cameras like this in SF as well for the same reason.
