Java is solution for multi-core multiprocessor speed
Java was developed with the assumption that PCs would follow mainframe computers. A decade or more ago, in the mainframe world, machines had already been created that were multi-processor based and multi-core. It was proven technology back then and there was every expectation that PCs would follow that proven technology. In the mainframe environment, speed has become a function of how well threaded the software is written and not so much on CPU clock speed and Java makes threading very easy.

The reason PCs did not become multi-processor multi-core until recently is with-little-doubt owing to illegal use of monopoly power by Microsoft. Judge Jackson established in the last US antitrust case that Microsoft harmed Netscape because the Netscape browser was an enabler to Java distribution on PCs and Microsoft feared Java.

Java on PCs only made sense a decade ago given the assumption that PCs would be multi-processor multi-core because programmers can always code C or C++ to run faster on a single processor that is clocked at a high speed. Hence OpenOffice ran slower than Microsoft Office on last year's PCs.

The problem is that highly clocked CPUs run hot. The problems with Xbox are likely related to the clock speed of the CPU. Consumers have been harmed for a decade by PCS that (given what mainframes were made of) were obsolete from the day they were turned on because they had only a single processor.

What happened is that last year the finish phones came out multi-processor. The reason likely had to do with power consumption. A singleton computer at high clock speed consumes more power than is needed when the machine has a low load. Multi processor machines save power by turning off processors when not needed and Apple came out with the first multi-processor laptop probably to save battery power as much as anything and bang - a decade worth of consumer harm started being undone.

Java is a solution on mainframes and servers big time. It became a solution for phones and laptops that are multi processor based for power saving reasons. It is the solution for the future because of deployment and rich user presentations. AJAX was simply a place holder.

The church of the future of software design is now closed.
The doors are open nonetheless.
