Inquiry from Frank Mighetto regarding ADC Feedback
Email address: Fmigh@oah.wa.gov
Region: United States

I develop for the state of Washington and am disappointed that Java applets are not supported by the Iphone Safari browser. We utilize GotoMyPC from Citrix as well as other Citrix technology to access email, PCs via VNC, server based applications, and old COBOL CICS main frame applications.

The Citrix technology currently uses Java applets and Citric technology is basic for our strategy involving mobile computing. It works great with Java supporting browsers.

Perhaps there is another Citric mechanism available via iPhone.

In any case please advise, I am hoping that the Iphone Safari browser will eventually support Java applets and if so would like to know approximately when the browser will be enhanced. I understand that Java is embedded into the iPhone hardware.

Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. I refer specifically to the following text from your web site.

Unsupported Technologies

Youll want to avoid using Flash and Java for iPhone content. Youll also want to avoid encouraging users from downloading the latest Flash to their iPhone, because neither Flash nor downloads are supported by Safari on iPhone.
Differences Between Safari on iPhone and Safari on the Computer Desktop

There are a few differences between how Safari works on iPhone and on the computer desktop.

By default, Safari on iPhone blocks popup windows. However, it is a preference that users may change.

Safari on iPhone supports:

Cookies
Userinitiated windowopen calls. There is a limit of 8 pages (equivalent to 8 open windows) in page view.

Safari on iPhone does not support:

window.showModalDialog()
Mouseover events
Hover styles
Tool tips
Java applets
Flash
Plugin installation
Custom x.509 certificates
