valid question
The underlying question is: Why does Windows run as root as the default?

Again, Joe Blow Dude You're Getting A Dell just wants to plug the thing and get it to work. He doesn't want to have to set up a non-administrative account. He doesn't even want to sit there and dealing with updating the machine. And he is the weak link in the virus propagating chain, not the locked down workstations at Acme Widgets.

THAT, my friend, is the big problem with Windows. There are other slight security annoyances with Windows, but by far, the default setup of Windows is the biggest. Actually, I think we agree on most things here. The way an OS comes set up by default is a big deal when it comes to security. OpenBSD - one of the most secure OS's on the planet owes much of it security to the simple fact that it comes, by default, virtually useless.

When I say autoupdate being run by by users can be a security hazard - I'm just thinking from my admin perspective. When you have to administster around 1200 Windows machines, you DON'T leave the updating to the users. wink
