"Your point about files being executable by default in Windows is valid, but I hope you realize that Windows can be used as a restricted user just like any other OS, and that any program executed under a restricted account would be confined to the user's space - just like any other OS."

Your arguement fails on the windows platform because WIN32 developers can't write software properly (a legacy of the poor security design of the OS). This results in many Applications (MYOB, Norton anti-virus, etc) not working with restricted USER permissions, but having to be run as "POWER USER".

How many VBScript kiddies save config .ini files in the System32 directory?

Norton anti-virus 2004 requiring "POWER USER" permissions to update it's anti-virus subscription is a joke.

If the windows developers weren't so bad MS wouldn't have a "POWER USER" group at all (no such things on *nix). Just to further dent your arguement I believe even the USER account can write to its STARTUP directory, so the virii can keep itself running after a restart. Better I stop here...
