"Mac-centered mass-mailing worm"?
My concern with this article is contained in the following statement, "it would be tough for a Mac-centered mass-mailing worm to find enough targets to allow it to propagate effectively...". First of all, most internet "worms" aren't distributed by "email" as typical Windows' "Macro" viruses are. They generally propogate in the wild by exploiting buffer overflow vulnerabilities on unpatched sytems directly. Secondly, UNIX/Linux based systems would generally require a "chmod" to any script in an attachement in order to execute since client users wouldn't/shouldn't be operating as root. Thus it would be tough to distibute ANY immediately executable virus for UNIX/Linux systems via email. And lastly, scripts aren't "auto-executed" in an attachement on a UNIX/Linux email client as they can be in Windows systems. Even if this could/did occur, the scope of the effect would be limited to the users' environment and not the entire system. Root permission would be required to have that effect. I don't think such comparisons between UNIX/Linux systems and Windows OS are very useful. There really isn't any comparison, when it comes to mission critical security, the premise of Windows' "popularity" drawing the attention of malicious code and malware is simply a popular fallacy. It's a rationalization attempting to prop up Windows' claims regarding the security issues facing their flagship product.
