Chickens coming home to roost
Maybe the real issue is that it is not that Mac OS is so wonderfu, from a security perspective, but rather it is such a small portion of the market, and declining, that no self respecting writer of worms or viruses will bother if it is going to affect such a tiney number of computers.

Apple is increasingly failing their customers. This and the recent mess with the iPod battery issue should be major warning that all is not well in the Apple Orchard.
