Okay, I just tried it
Try to open and modify c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts from a users account.

I just tried it and it wouldn't let me. Permission denied. Hmm, maybe it is because my user account doesn't have administrator privileges? Like I said, you cannot modify system files from a non administrator account in Windows.

In fact, if you were so smart about Windows, you would also know that you can install some (not all) software from a user account which also affects the registry and system files.

Yes, you can install some software from a user account. Which software? Any software that does not attempt to modify any system registry settings or any system files. You can modify your user settings in the registry just like you can modify files in your ~/.fvwm directory.

You can't infect or modify all system files, but you can definitely infect/modify some.

Which ones? You were wrong about the hosts file so maybe you are wrong about the others?

How do you think spyware gets installed on Windows machines?

I don't know, I don't get spyware on my Windows machines.
