Those 'rules' apply to any business
How long does a car last? A TV? Radio? CD player? You'll find that the vast majority of products are built to last anywhere from 1 to 10 years. After that, consumers are expected to buy a replacement. Ethical or not, it's how business is done.

Software is a bit of a different ballgame from traditional material goods, but not that different.

Should I assume that my 13 year old Honda is faulty because is didn't include Airbags and Antilock brakes? After all, Volvo's had those things back then. I should be appalled at Honda for selling me such a 'faulty' product. I'll be in big trouble if a 2 ton SUV (*something not quite as common 13 years ago*) plows into me.

That's it! I'm going to demand that Honda install side curtain airbags and anti-lock brakes on my Accord. Forcing me to buy a new model to get these important security features is simply unethical and shows that Honda is an evil company who is only interested in forcing me onto the proverbial "upgrade treadmill".
