ClassMate

Intel's competitor to OLPC is a Windows XP machine called Class Mate. You have to view this machine with the notion that it is an OLPC killer being price supported by Intel and Microsoft to kill off OLPC because OLPC uses AMD and Linux.

This is just all so disgusting. It make private charitable efforts look like what they probably always have been - shills for for profit companies. Neither the ClassMate nor the OLPC organizations are looking good. Can we some how make it stop?

Yes we can. The IT industry has done a huge amount with industry standardization. I propose a moratorium on laptops for children. Lets instead take the money already donated and use it to set standards. Lets first set the internet connectivity standard because that is the source of security problems. Lets pick WiMax, or GSM or something else not WiFi. A lot of standardization has already been picked by the IT industry. ClassMate fails there. But OLPC still fails IMO with its reliance on WiFi.
