Again WiFi is Killing One Laptop Per Child Program
I was appalled to discover that the OLPC project was dependent on WiFi. Here you have a Linux box that will work in a life boat. IE it is water proof and sand proof and you can wind it up to power it. Hence it is a likely emergency device for situations like Katrina.

I was expecting every boater to purchase two with one going to a child and the other being stored with the emergency equipment, to be used for weather monitoring, evacuation planning, and communication when the next Katrina hits.

Then the fatal flaw - WiFi. And not only WiFi but what I am thinking should be called pirate WiFi because the range is extended.

Lets walk through this. Another Katrina hits. The federal government decides once again to cut communications. (under the plausible theory that criminals use it for looting and the looting causes more harm than death - oh how disgusting). The law enforcers jam WiFi.

Or perhaps these dictators do not even have to. Perhaps it is just like any storm at sea and VHF were every anxious captain's wife is putting out a mayday at the highest watts possible with the end result being the jamming of all VHF communication.

Do we fail to learn. No there is learning. Unfortunately there are also wrong doers. Put a stop to it. This is where government has to set standards like GSM or WiMax. WiFi is not just the security acillies heal killng OLPC. It is the reason to kill the One Laptop Per Child projects. War Lords love WiFi. Every wrong doer does.
