Not even research.
It took research to actually figure out that if people know you have a laptop it's more likely to get stolen.

Actually, it is worse than that. They didn't actually do any research, they just asked people what they thought would be the case. From the article:

Research conducted by silicon.com has found the vast majority of laptop users believe carrying their computer in a branded and conspicuous laptop bag puts them at far greater risk than if they use a sports bag or backpack to carry their hardware.
