I already replied, but...
You are talking about apples and oranges. First they did tell many admins (as the article indicated) and they patched their systems. Then after they ran out of specific people to warn, they came out with this news so they were aware of the problem. In my opinion this was handled correctly since the flaw could have compromised future releases of public software. There is a big difference in a flaw that affects only my business and a flaw that could potentially affect thousands (or millions) of systems; now and in the future.

Microsoft on the other hand has been critized and so have others (Novell comes to mind). However the critisim is valid (including in this case, but I happen to disagree with you), though Microsoft has made huge improvmemts to this process. In the past they would deny the flaw and then release a patch for the flaw they denied existed. That did not happen here.

The problem now is Microsoft has a reputation for being, shall we say, less than up front. They are much better now and that is great. But it takes only a second to lose trust and years to rebuild it. The situation to me in this case was they wanted to protect the source code of major operating systems and applications. then when the time is right announce to the less obvious systems the problem and correction.
