So what is Secure on the Net these days ???
Just like SCOs probably bogus attack on Linux and the open source community ( shadowwed and maybe supported by larger players in the backgraound )
this highlights the all round lack of security with net connected systems.

MS are trying to bring longhorn to market by 2005.
Linux has been having an impact on the global OS
market. If an open source project can be compromised like that, how do we know Linux hasn't been compromised in the past like this ?

I think SCOs claims are ******** and FUD intended to stall the market for Linux. THis will give MS some time to get longhorn to market and further weaken any hold Linux may take on the desktop OS market.

It's not working anyway. Linux is steaming ahead
regardless.

It does highlight the fact that software can be compromised online in many ways. With the SCO case
( and they haven't really shown anyone anything to substantiate their claims thus far )
Unix 5 code could have been copied into Linux a long time ago ( before SCOs claimed purchase from
Novelle the extent of which Novelle is disputing )
by "someone".

Someone could also have copied Linux code into Unix 5.

If there's code there that shouldn't be there
direction of transference ( source and destination and there are a few possibilities )
has to be established.

IBM had an old ploy in the old days called
"knock out technology" infest your oppositions'
products with bugs and release plenty of faulty product onto the market. In this case it could be
( not pin the tail on the donkey !!!)
plant the IP code and start sueing people !!!

Just one example of the games people could play.

Doesn't surprise me. How we build IT products at all levels has to change. Everything has to be set up with security in mind i.e. How could this supposedly innocuos item be compromised from software to hardware and I mean everything !!!!

Otherwise forget security on the net.
It will never be secure if we don't get serious.

There are ways to lock the net and connected systems down ( networks etc ). Maybe we lack the will because people are too busy getting products to market they compromise on quality and that includes security ?

Maybe the basic infrastructure and net protocols have to be redesigned from the ground up from a security stand point. Standardisation has both universal utility in terms of applications
but it also renders systems easier to compromise.

So we have more work to do.

We just need to get on with the implementation of better security infrastructure for the net and connected systems\networks.

But in the end we will never have perfect security.
