j.m.: Thanks. Makes sense. I think I've launched Safari two or three times which essentially doesn't count. I do have an OS X machine sitting on the other desk in my office, but since I'm responsible for PC support I use it only when necessary. Sounds like the "Open safe files after downloading" option is the kind of thing Microsoft catches flak for all the time. At least you can turn it off.

Stuka: Gotcha. I confess i initially thought the Admin group had essentially root permissions. I did some experimenting and now see it falls a little short of that. Much more control then a plain user account and probably enough to be dangerous, but not quite full root.

Bit: First, not all malware actually requires writing to system files. This exploit is such an example. Second, as nikoli said, there's no doubt a significant percentage of users who will just automatically type the root password whenever prompted.
