Created to track items in warehouse?
Um, RFID is old technology from the days when radar was being put on planes during the World Wars. They needed a way to be able to identify friendly planes (IFF). This is just another auto-id technology, using it in the warehouses (and Wal-Mart) got it lots of publicity.

The movement of boxes in warehouse is just like people across a border - you want to track them, positively identify them and not lose them.
