How is Apple any better?
Apple has no less of a desire to control and to lock people into a closed vendor relationship than Microsoft.

Go Linux, and choose everything you want on your computer, and nothing you don't want.

Ubuntu makes Linux as easy as Windows (some would say easier), Gentoo and ArchLinux allow you (even force you) to get into the innards of your operating system, and there are many distros in between to allow you varying level of control.

And the best part? It's all free.

Free web servers, free email servers, free file servers, free streaming media servers, everything is completely free.
