Some AV programs require to pay but you get additional benefits with it. Some are free. The corporate workplace will always pay for AV for support and ease of administration on the work PCs. The home users get it loaded automatically. Then they will ask their techie friend what they should and that friend will tell them AVG or Avast.

I hate to inform you but most PCs do update themselves. This is set to on by default, and windows will prompt you what you want to do on first boot up. It even says its recommended, so users will choose that option. The office will have the WSUS server to push the updates.

And since we aren't talking about cars but computers we can ignore your last paragraph.
