Judging by this post alone...
Loverock, this last post of yours is proof enough to most of the rest of us that zkiwi has far more real-world IT experience than you.

I've worked for several companies in various IT roles, and less than half block zip attachments as a standard practice. They're considered to be a normal part of information exchange.

That said, all companies I've worked for DO quickly put up temporary blocks when news of a threat like this appears.

Good, intelligent protection includes balancing business needs vs. possible threats. It's a delicate act.
