Having experienced Microsoft "critical updates" do everything from fry the boot sector to just wiping out 20GB of data, you learn to set that "Automatic Updates" crap to notify you without installing ANYTHING until you (1) prepare your system for possible disaster, and (2) review each update before you install and be ready to troubleshoot.

And on the subject of IE7, the main functional difference I've noticed after installing it is that the damned thing crashes a lot - noticably less stable than IE6, so I suspect there's more than a little of Microsoft's "fix one problem create two more" code lurking in there.
