Assuming the proposed scenario is self-descriptive:

You run production equipment, yes? You are aware of the risks of any kind of change, let alone changes to binary images at a system level, let alone changes to anything running CPL 0. It sounds to me like you (or your company rather) picked their battles by taking the easy approach to end user education and responsibility on the front-side. And it's a problematic approach as a means to meet this "general expectation" we have for end users; which on the surface also means more $$$.

Welcome to the backside and the inherent cost of such decisions. One day ISPs will get it. Until then, they'll rape the market with offerings they can't fullfill, take advantage of those who believe (aka. the ones who called without gnat's behind) in such services, and feel it is the ISPs responsibility...considering the really, really, really, really...bad "advice" given to them. And if you don't agree with that last statement, then consider your production equipment it's relevance to your operations, and the methodologies in place to provide that critical continuity. Then consider how you view client equipment in terms of criticality to them - as is evidenced by the offering made. Then take into account, that your view of client equipment is out-of-touch with the view of it's owners...your clients.
