Problem is in RealTek's code
"Apparently the update is not compatible with Realtek." No, apparantely RealTek is not compitible with the update, or more specifically, with Windows.

As I posted in response to another article:

I don't know exactly what RealTek was doing, but somehow they got hhctrl.ocx loaded in memory before user32.dll was loaded in memory (according to the KB article). Since hhctrl.ocx links directly to user32.dll (meaning that whenever you load hhctrl.ocx, the system will always pull in user32.dll), user32.dll will never fail to be in memory when hhctrl.ocx is. The only exception that I can think of, is if they're loading hhctrl.ocx directly from DllMain--since the loader lock is held in DllMain, user32.dll wouldn't be able to load. Loading modules from within DllMain is strictly forbidden in the Windows SDK documentation, so if RealTek does it, it deserves what it gets.
