re: Last version of windows
>>XP is probably the last version of windows that will be commercially successful. Longhorn requires *SO MUCH* hardware to run that you won't have that when it comes out.<<

Oh... I dunno about that. Consider the computers we had, say, 12 years ago that were considered "hot" items then and compare them to the latest offerings we have today. Back then, 4 MB of RAM was HUGE. Today, the average box comes with 256 MB or 512 MB and some come with even more. Hard drive space was measured in MB, not GB. 40 MHz was BLAZINGLY fast back then. Today, anything less than 1 GHz is considered to be painfully slow.

>>It will have new huge security holes so it can be a media-OS and let you play video without fully booting it up.<<

Maybe... But I think Microsoft has learned it's lessons. Customers are too wary. This is probably why we aren't seeing Longhorn come out on schedule. There will, no doubt be leaks, patches and service packs to come, but probably not on the scale we've seen in the past.

And what's wrong with playing media files without booting up? Many laptops today can play audio CDs without being fully booted. Playing a DVD or other media file from the hard drive seems to be the next logical - and innovative - step.

>>It will have digital rights management on everything so you'll be hassled when you try to use the computer.<<

Of course it will. The RIAA and MPAA must be mollified. We've seen this coming for years. Nothing new here.

>>Also, alternatives such as Linux will be 2 years more towards what consumers want by the time Longhorn comes out.<<

Probably... So what. There's already a successful desktop Linux distro out there. It's called a MAC. And even still, it's success hasn't put that big a dent in the Windows juggernaught.

>>XP-SP2 might be the last version of windows you want to run.<<

Doubtful. I'll believe that when I see the apps I use and support coming out with a Linux version. And it will, no doubt, be a cold, frigid day in the netherworld before that happens.
