Software piracy is wrong
and Microsoft has every right to make it difficult to run pirated copies of Windows.

However, one reason Microsoft is king of the desktop is that a great many people ran pirated copies of Windows and MS Office in the pre-XP days. And continue to do so today.

But now that Microsoft has made it more difficult for Joe Sixpack to run a bootleg copy of XP or Office he has more incentive to run OpenOffice/StarOffice instead of MS Office, so Microsoft's stand on piracy cuts both ways.

And as companies like Novell and IBM make GNU/Linux more newbee friendly, there will be more people buy/use non-MS pcs.

Microsoft will continue to be a major player on the desktop for years to come, but their market share has nowhere to go but down and they will have to get used to sharing the desktop.

But that will be good for everyone, including Microsoft. Now they have an incentive to truly "innovate".
