Profit versus growth
Many of the products mentioned are part of their monopoly
products, so they really shouldn't count (at least as far as what I
asked). I also note that much of what you've listed are far from
profitable (for example, the Xbox, which is sucking up an
astounding hundreds of millions of dollars continuously without
showing any profit). It's nice that they're #2, but it's still
hemorhagging money.

I do agree with you though, that the strategy can be successful.
However, it is a costly strategy, one in which a majority of your
attempts are doomed to failure. One really has to be in a
position like MS, with a virtual Fort Knox filled with disposable
cash in order to even give most of these things a chance.
