Scattergun approach to business and markets
MS seems to have this obsessive need (based on Gates' personality?) to enter the most popular or "hot" markets with the belief MS should own or control anything that has a chance of succeeding.

MS watches where markets are headed or successful (above and beyond normal business practices) and is typically late to jump in with both feet just to gain a presence, whether or not it makes economic or business sense. It's successful??? ... MS just has to get in there.

It's been late to jump into... PDAs, cell phones, gaming machines, web mail, media players, (to come... online music store, search engine), etc. and has generally "failed" because, as others have stated, it could not simply rely on the brute force of it's Windows monopoly to instantly, easily and "automatically" overcome all competitors.

Years back, MS hastily jumped into the 3D/imaging field when it was the "hot", buzzword topic of the day by scooping up SoftImage, only to sheepishly sell it off a few years later (to Avid?).

MS was late entering the WiFi market when WiFi was THE buzzword of the day and a potential new market to dominate only to again drop out.

MS was late to gaming and was losing money (per machine) even when the XBox was first introduced, only to recently cut prices FURTHER in an attempt to catch Sony's PS2 (recent sales numbers seem to suggest it's working... more XBoxes sold but bigger losses?). Though the XBox could be MS's Trojan Horse, sneaking into the computer (hardware) market (waiting until anti trust dies down?) since it's more "desktop computer" (new XBox rumoured to use IBM "Apple's G5" PowerPC chip?) than typical, dedicated gaming machine. If so, look out MS "buddies" Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. MS partner today = MS victim tomorrow happy

With the amount of MS's ill-gotten gain in the bank, it can continue the scattergun approach to business and markets (spreading itself thin and entering everything it can), odds being it will eventually hit "pay dirt".

Perhaps MS should stick to trying to fix it's mainstay Windows "monopoly" first before polluting any other markets.
