It's called FOCUS!
While other companies have floundered by trying to be all things to everybody, MS stays close to their core business, and only makes forays into other business lines when they think it will directly enhance their core business (e.g., Xbox and online services). Their entry into and exit from WiFi hardware was just like what they did with soundcards back in the early 90s--try to kick-start a new market by putting the MS name on the hardware (a name that most consumers know AND trust, by the way). With soundcards, it was to nudge people into thinking of their PCs as an entertainment device, thereby getting people to upgrade and setting the stage for the multimedia capabilities of Windows 95. For WiFi, the goal was to make it more attractive for consumers to buy computers (and, of course, more MS software) for additional rooms by easily sharing an internet connection and peripherals. Once their objectives had been accomplished in both these areas, MS exited the markets with little fanfare and no regrets.
