Don't fix it - buy silence
First of course is the blatent mis-use of the term "hacker" by this and other media. The misuse of this word is similar to when the news shows were screaming "LOOK AT THIS * SEX * ON THE 'INTERNET'"!!! and showing a screenfull of AOL...

Second, and to the point of this article, Microsoft is simply trying to 'buy silence' with this bounty.

Don't get me wrong, I make my living partially from the holes in Microsoft products - even so, I'm not in agreement with what CRACKERS do with this holier-than-any-other operating system.

(But then I'm also not in agreement that Microsoft sells a real operating system or knows how to make one... and don't get me started on Microsoft's claim that DOS stood for "Disk Operating System" when what it came from was called "Quick and Dirty Operating System" leaving Microsoft with a simple DOS... happy

And I'd be MUCH happier making my money creating new ways for my clients to get their work done than fixing their systems because of some stupid bit of programming in an overstuffed and overcomplicated excuse for an operating system.

If Microsoft were to create a simple computer OPERATING SYSTEM instead of a whole computing 'environment', and then build all their toys on top of that, they could have a secure operating system. But until they get the * OPERATING SYSTEM * going securely first, the rest of the fluffly-pretty-stuff-dumb-users-can-use that Microsoft likes to market as 'part of the operating system' will NEVER follow in a secure fashion.

Basics come before extravagence - not the other way around!
