one would be better off trying FreeBSD prior to making an expensive Apple or Microsoft purchase. Most people complain that eye candy is the tax of the purchase, when Linux and FreeBSD have a great number of shells and applications that it questionable why we still spend money on these ole horses. It isn't a quantum leap to expand them to a level of their commercial and sometimes proprietary cousins.
