re: well, it seems to me the article
hmmm, and pray tell, exactly what is the operating system of a MaC??? I do believe OS X is a Unix BSD derivative. Just as Linux is a Unix derivative.

I see absolutely no reason to switch to Windows Vista. When I am force to hand over hundreds of dollars to switch, that is when I will remove Windows completely from my dual-boot machine and use Linux only.

That won't be a downgrade, it will be an improvement. As it stands right now, my 3.2 Ghz, 512 mb mem, (2) 40 Gb drives run the lastest version of linux (any version) much better than Windows XP SP2 on the exact same hardware.

As for work, we will be hosting our own website on a Linux machine running the store via OS Commerce.
Total OS/Software cost: $0.00
New Machine to run it on: $400
Training to use the OS: Price of a book/linux help forums (free)

To do the same on a Windows Machine the total cost would be broken down as follows:
OS Server/Desktop Cost $129-$2999
New machine to be a server $500-$5000
Software to secure the server: $200-1000

Training to use Windows Server:
Price of a book/$150 per support call to Microsoft

So tell me again why Microsoft is better than Linux??? Other than they have a much better marketing department. Don't get me wrong, Microsoft is a great games machine, but it is too easily hacked into, with too many holes in the basic operating system because of the way it was designed. The original design was based on a stand alone computer with no networking/internet capabilities, which contributes to it's major flaws in security, especially when installed right from the box. Linux on the other hand has the background of 20+ years of Unix and it is designed as a network/internet computer, it is secure right from the box. Granted in both systems, there will always be bugs, but when taken as a whole, the difference between the bugs is immense. Normally they are overflow buffer bugs. But Linux has a history of fixing them much faster than once a week or once a month, unlike some other operating systems.

Yes, I use both windows and linux, and i like linux better for the most part. As for using microsoft office, have you ever heard of openoffice? it can do the same thing as microsoft office and can read and write to office files. what i have noticed though is that the standards are slowly swinging away from office file standards to the odt standards.

So i leave you with this parting thought, how much money have you spent on windows software in the last 12 years??? You must have a great job where you can afford to spend all that money. I live on a tight budget and I can't afford to keep spending all that money. even if i did have the money, i wouldn't spend lots of money on software that for the most part, is extremely proprietary.
