"I don't understand why people are deeming it soooo important that we get Joe Average "up to speed" or "on board".

Because Joe Average swims in the same water (internet) that I do. His infected machine eats bandwidth, promotes spam, can be used for DoS attacks, and in general fouls the water we must all use.
