Why it's important
Do you realize just how much network bandwidth is used up by infected machines? Do those DDOS attacks fall into your "who cares" attitude? I am curious which particular system you're referring to as a replacement for that second rate product. Linux? You expect Joe Average to get a Linux machine up, running and secure? Mac? Joe Average can definately use this, but can he afford it?

Don't get me wrong here. I'm not trying to defend Microsoft's security problems. If anything, it's the fact they expect everyone to believe Windows is so friendly anyone can use it. Which is somewhat true, at least until Joe Average gets it home, plugs it into the internet and realizes just how much of a jungle it is out there.

As to your driving analogy, many companies are working on an automatic braking system similar to the adaptive cruise control that slows the vehicle if it comes up behind a slower moving vehicle. On a simpler level, does your state have seat belt laws?
