Chinese are fully employed
The Chinese army has been working very productively on their information warfare capabilities. This may have been nothing more than a probing attack, or it could've been tied to something larger. Was there any international incident or near incident that might've been connected, as a force-multiplier? The failed attempt to bomb Cheney in Afghanistan was too remote in time, but that's the sort of thing that if successful would wreak havoc especially if the internet was knocked down for a critical few hours. If that could be accomplished, those third-world bot-herds would've pulled off a historically significant victory for asymmetric info-warfare.

Meanwhile, they're engaged in lucrative work, phishing and pharming sap our economic strength and allow them to divert wealth into non-productive hands.

The zombie owners aren't the only ones to blame, it's also the Micro$ofts and all the other vendors that ship insecure default configs in the interest of convenience for lame lusers.

The earlier talk about ways to win the internet war miss one important point, the ISPs and corporations are driven by free market forces, not altruism. There's got to be a pretty compelling case to override the self interest of the balance sheet, and the same goes for the individuals who run unpatched and answer work-at-home phishing scams.
