Microsoft became the popular way to go because they broke the
law! They told OEM's it's 100% MS OS or it's no OS for you, baby.
So the OEM's, instead of suing MS, acquiesced and now you, my
friend, are a Windows user because your choices on IBM
compatibles were taken away from you long before anyone took
them to court. When they did, the damage was done.

It's a matter of public record.

As for viruses? You will find that most of the virus writers are
not social misfits, but pretty brilliant kids showing up MS's
inability to write secure OS software. And since Linux and OS X
are much more secure than Windows, the blame can only lie
squarely on the shoulders of Microsoft.

Come over to the light side - Apple and the OSS community are
providing what is arguably the best computing experience on
the planet. Why bother with anything less?
