over the alternatives. Microsoft became the popular way to go because it provided huge benefits at very low cost level and was ever so affordable versus more traditional computing solutions that could not scale downwards. One of the things that lagged was security, but no one had such a high value on that.

Even today the greatest security risk is more from loss of use of one's computer than compromise of critical data. Vandals trash the internet with e-mail spam and viruses, the net effect of which is to deny a person's access to these useful tools. But the tools themselves would not have existed in the absence of the popularist kind of OS and application environment constructed by Mr. Softee's leadership over the past two decades.

The problem is not with Microsoft as much as with society's lack of controlling the social misfits that create and distribute the viruses to the rest.
