Turning off unnecessary services...
Can be a real challenge on Windows where not even Microsoft really knows what you can turn off without adversely affecting other needed services. (Per their white paper about the difficulties they had trying to get Windows to do what the *BSD used to do at hotmail.com... Several years later they were still trying to get Windows to do the job...)

I agree that a "software firewall" is far from ideal. (I personally use an old Pentium 90 - used to be a 486 - with two 10MB network cards (still faster than my broadband connection) running Smoothwall between my computers and the internet.)
Total cost $35.00 (I built it with an old "salvage computer and left over parts. Running free version of Smoothwall) Love OpenSource!!!!
