"Without security software"
"Security software" is grossly overrated. Turn off unnecessary services (which is, basically, anything network-related unless you're running a server) and you're done.

If you're running a server, it's better to have a dedicated packet filter at the firewall rather than relying on software "firewalls" [1] anyway, but your basic clueless user has no business running a server in the first place. If you can't afford a hardware firewall, you can't afford the "security software" either, since the hardware is generally cheaper -- unless you have something like iptables or BPF, which are very good as well as free in both senses.

If in doubt, run nmap or something similar to check for open ports.

[1] Another oxymoron: "software firewall."
