eBay is its own worst enemy
(1) Where phishing is concerned, it is now possible for hackers to post bogus auctions on eBay. When you click on them you are immediately directed to reveal your user ID and password. (You should be getting details about the auction item at this point - user ID and password information are only needed to place a bid, not to view an auction description.) Why does eBay allow this activity?

(2) Where phoney merchandise is concerned, eBay gives its POWER SELLER ranking to those who regularly sell counterfeit music recordings. All the seller need do is characterize his/her offering as a "reproduction" or special "collectors reissue" to tip off the serious buyer who only wants the real thing. Yet the seller still gets plenty of business and great feedback from those who simply want something cheap that they cannot easily find at their local record/CD store. You bring in the business, eBay gives you its blessing, no questions asked.

(3) eBay has become a shill for PayPal. No longer can you say that you accept cash payments in your auction descriptions. The effort to drive more and more transaction business to PayPal has become raw, obnoxious, and overwhelming. The wags at eBay have forgotten what is still printed on every US dollar bill: "THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE." Nothing there at all about PayPal! Apparently eBay now believes it is a quasi-government unto itself dictating what the coin of the realm shall be. The time is ripe for some legal minds who relish the pulic interest to take on these auction clowns and put them back on track. They have so obviously been intoxicated by a decade of insane cash flow -- riches that NONE OF THEM remotely deserves as yet -- that sound and honest business practices have been discarded as a pesky nuisance.

POGO would understand.
