Like fromthehip, my Update prompts have iTunes irrevocably
tied to the update. Even though i did the standalone install
of QuickTime.

My only recourse is to go to the Apple site and specifically
upload a new fresh standalone copy.

We're not complaining about Apple's packaging of iTunes as
an option, we're just peeved that it thinks we might change
our minds about not wanting it.

The Windows equivalent are Office Updates... whether or not
you've chosen to install Outlook, the updates -will- attempt
to patch/install it as a part and parcel of the security
updates. So, yes, they're both "guilty"

Compare and contrast to Linux updates, which sometimes fail
due to unsatisfied dependencies (not all subpackages are in
the yum-accessible resources).
