Microsoft subsidized that XBox

Hint: The cost of the XBox and now the XB 360 is less than the component costs. In other words, Microsoft is subsidizing the cost of the console, as they expect to make up for the loss by selling games.

If you could buy a subsidized console, then run Linux on it, you've just bought yourself a decent computer for less money than you could build it. Imagine a college kid - lots of time, little money. Get a few million kids doing this, all of a sudden, Microsoft's loss-leader model fails to generate positive revenue.
