Who says this problem is only for invasion of personal data?
These issues always seem to be either extreme right or extreme left. Can't anyone ever think in between those parameters? Such a problem can also be used to merely destroy certain firmware instructions for the computer, thus preventing the hardware it affects from working. Remember? A rootkit puts in coded instructions, which tell the computer what to do, or not before the computer boots. Such a rootkit can tell any part of your PC not to do the task intended. In my case it told the IDE to do nothing, and that's exactly what it did! Such a rootkit can be used to shut you completely down if so designed. If that happens your only choices are a new hard drive, or a LLF to make yours like a new one. The standard format will not work, and most HD manufacturers today tell you that you don't need to do a LLF. Ig nore them if you have a rootkit problem that shuts you, or any particular hardware down, and do a Low Level Format, or buy a new hard drive.
