Below is aletter I sent to Microsoft. In return I got some canned response that did nothing but increase my determination to buy something other than Microsoft in the future. If Gates is on hard times these days, he's welcome to come by my house I'll give him a sandwich and advice.

Here's my letter...

I bought a Gateway 556GE computer and it arrived with a flaw. I use dial-up and although I could directly connect with the dial-up. if I shut it down to say receive a FAX I could not re-connect to the dial-up with out rebooting. On each attempt to reconnect without rebooting I received an "ERROR 20" message. I contacted Gateway repeatedly and their help was less than useless.

I was discussing my problem with a neighbor and he told me I should just reinstall the XP program. He thought I had a corrupted communications file and that reinstalling would cure the problem. Gateway did not provide a Windows XP CD. He offered to let me use his CD. I did the reinstall and sure enough the ERROR 20 message went away and my computer then worked. Some time later, I get a notificatin from you that my OS program is a pirate copy. All this happened back in May. You have some IE update which I cannot access and that is why I'm sending this letter.

Let me tell you this: I am about 70 years of age. I have been a Microsoft user since 1989. The computer I now own was bought with earned money. No part of this computer is stolen. It arrived with an error in the OS which I was unable to solve through Gateway's (Ha! Ha!) technical support. I feel dumped upon by your company.

Four of my friends on hearing my trouble decided to buy other-than-Microsoft systems. Three bought Apples, one bought a Linix and my daughter recently bought an Apple laptop. Hopefully with this letter you will cure my authentication problem at no cost to me. If not I will just continue to use it until it dumps then go to Apple myself.

I am damned embarrassed at your treament of a long-time, faithful customer.
