The OS and the Machine
I replied to one post and continued to read this thread. One point really stuck out for me. It's the concept that the OS should come with the machine. The analogy made was that it was like buying a car and being stiffed for the engine (concerning the way you have to buy the OS to let the machine run).

Remember the early days? IBM was going to offer the original PC with a 16 bit version of CP-M but it wasn't developed yet, so they went looking for a cheap Disk Operating System from outside vendor. It just so happened that the guy they wanted to buy it from was out boating at the time, so Bill Gates jumped at the opportunity and look where that got him.
